About Observatory Property
Observatory is a quaint and arty village with many bohemian shops, restaurants and bars lining the main street. Made up mostly of charming Victorian Cottages, Observatory is a popular area for first time buyers and those seeking a vibrant and alternative lifestyle. Observatory or ‘Obs’ as it is fondly termed was named after the location of the first Royal Observatory in the area established in 1820. The area is sandwiched between University campuses, the slopes of Devils Peak (with stunning views) the railway line to the City Bowl and Mowbray and Salt River on either side. In ‘the day’ this suburb was mainly frequented by students and lecturers as access to campus life was and still is so convenient. Over time the more trendy creative set nudged their way in along with first time homeowners looking for property for sale but also families who enjoyed the village life and wanted their youngsters to grow up in a slightly alternative space. With a distinctly ‘Obs’ entertainment scene there is always something to do or see at the drop of a hat. Unusual cottages, most in pristine condition after loving renovations, line the streets much like a typical English village. Houses in ‘Obs’ are quite distinct with their double story design and ‘broekies lace’ detail on balconies make for a charming atmosphere. Kids racing their bikes up and down the street, interesting arty folk making their colorful way to work or the University and neighbors chatting over the fence like generations gone by, make for a secure and highly sought after environment. Access to the Peninsula is a breeze. Right on your doorstep, along with the railway line you’ll find the main freeway taking you to Town and the popular V&A Waterfront in a matter of minutes. Bus stops line the main road taking children to schools and the hop on hop off lifestyle that speaks of ease and convenience makes for a very appealing area to live in. World famous Groote Schuur Hospital is your neighbor as is a hockey and soccer stadium that sees their fair share of incredible performances both locally and internationally.
