About Fish Hoek Property
Fish Hoek is a coastal town on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula. Property on the mountainside boasts spectacular sea views across to Kalk Bay and a beautiful stretch of beach running the whole length of the town. Fish Hoek or Vissers Bay appears on the earliest maps of the Cape. The arrival of European settlers in 1652 forced the indigenous population to leave the region and then in the 1700s farmers appeared in the Noordhoek area. Fish Hoek beach was used on an informal basis for whaling and fishing, but it was not until 1918 that it was laid out as a township and development began.
This seaside village is surrounded by rugged mountains rich in fauna and fynbos flora, but the jewel in the crown is the accessible and protected bay, around which most of the town’s activity is centred. The beach is about 1.5 kilometres long and the bay is protected from the stronger currents in the rest of False Bay. The water is warmer than the Atlantic Seaboard, making it a favourite with swimmers, wind surfers, kayakers and body surfers. The perimeter of the bay offers prime whale watching opportunities, especially between July and November when Southern Right Whales are in the bay to calf.
The strip of rocky coastline on the southern side of the bay has a wonderful promenade, which winds its way past rock pools and is well-trodden by busy children, walkers and fishermen. If you see property for sale along this side of the bay you can bet it offers something special. Locals know not to miss moonrise and sunrise on Fish Hoek beach – they are simply breathtaking.
In addition to the world-class beaches, Fish Hoek is a great destination for birdwatching, with over 50 species having been spotted. The valley is famous for 12 000-year-old Palaeolithic skeletons discovered in a cave by an explorer called Bertie Peers in 1927. Other attractions in the area are Clovelly Golf Course and the charming area of Kalk Bay just around the corner. When it comes to dining there is something for everyone in the valley – a good range of tea and coffee shops, restaurants, snack bars and take-away options abound.
