About St James Property

Bordering the trendy Kalk Bay area, mountainside homes in St James enjoy panoramic views across the Indian Ocean. St James is ideally situated just a few minutes’ walk from the trendy streets of Kalk Bay with its string of quaint antique and boutique stores, seaside restaurants, bars and delis. St James is a quaint seaside town offering a haven from the bustle of city living. Locals enjoy the vibrant sense of community and enjoy walking along the sea edge, buying fresh bread from the bakery, swimming in the tidal pool and playing tennis.

The magnificent mountain forms a backdrop to their property where many beautiful walks with breathtaking views await. The suburb only stretches for 1.5km but the area is packed with little gems waiting to be discovered. St James beach is small but utterly charming with its colourful row of bright bathing boxes and beautiful rock pools just begging to be explored. The beach is popular because it offers safe swimming, is protected from the wind and is conveniently close to the Simons Town train line. St James is named after the St James Roman Catholic Church, built in 1858 for the Filipino fishermen of Kalk Bay. When the railway was constructed from Cape Town, the site of this church was required for a railway station. The local priest only agreed to give up his site on condition that the new station be named ‘St. James’. St James was the first resort to be developed by the British in the early 1900’s and has many places of historical interest.

A number of homes date back to the time when the Cape was a colony of the Victorian empire. One such home is Rhodes cottage, the first Cape residence of the renowned mining magnate. From St James towards Muizenberg, many other gracious stone houses remain as testament to a wealthy colonial past, during which the main road was known as “Millionaire’s Mile”. Property for sale in this area is still highly sought after today.
