About Muizenberg Property
Muizenberg is a relaxed seaside suburb of Cape Town, situated where the shore of the Cape Peninsula curves round to the east on the False Bay coast. It is considered the birthplace of surfing in South Africa and is loved by families for its long, flat walking beach and warm water. Muizenberg has been enjoying a revival and those wishing for a more laid-back lifestyle go in search of property here. Muizenberg was initially a cattle farm and later became a military outpost under Sergeant Muis when it became known as Fort Muys. The Railway Line was extended to Muizenberg in 1822, which led to more development in the area. When the British defeated the Dutch in 1795 in the Battle of Muizenberg, the Cape became a British Colony. After the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, the gold magnates began building their holiday houses in Muizenberg and it quickly became a fashionable resort with plenty of property for sale.
Magnificent homes were built along Beach Road, many of them designed by Herbert Baker. The main feature of Muizenberg is its lovely, long beach that stretches all the way to the Strand, a distance of over 20 km. It is known for its colourful bathing boxes and fun entertainment area just behind the beach offering miniature putt-putt and the super-tube. False Bay is also known for its population of White Sharks and a shark watching service operates from Muizenberg, sending alerts when sharks come close to shore.
Another feature of the area is The Zandvlei estuary which enters the ocean in Muizenberg. The estuary is one of the most important for fish spawning on the coastline and is also home to the Imperial Yacht Club and Peninsula Canoe Club. Those in search of culture will love the Masque Theatre, which presents a large variety of plays, musical shows, ballet, comedy and jazz. Another little gem is the Muizenberg Flea Market an outdoor market which opens at Sunrise Circle every Sunday and public holiday.
