About Kommetjie Property

The quaint seaside village bordering the soetwater nature reserve of Kommetjie offers a holiday lifestyle just 35 minutes from Cape Town. Although now relatively developed, Kommetjie has managed to retain much of its rural appeal. Residents enjoy the beach on their doorstep with many a property boasting panoramic views of the rugged coastline and Atlantic Ocean. Kommetjie (meaning ‘small basin’) derives its name from its early beginnings, when settlers used the natural ocean basin as a convenient fish trap.

Today the suburb’s main attraction is its long, beautiful beach, which extends for more than 8km to Noordhoek. Long Beach is a popular dog walking and horse-riding destination and the good waves make it popular amongst surfers. About 3km down the beach you’ll come across the wreck of the SS Kakapa, which ran aground in 1900. Another highlight is Kommetjie beach with its protected tidal pool making it perfect for families with toddlers.
The other beaches around Kommetjie, while not ideal for swimming are great for boats, which can be launched from the northern section of Sunset beach.

Kommetjie enjoys a great reputation for crayfishing between November and April. Kommetjie is home to the country’s tallest cast-iron lighthouse, the Slangkoppunt Lighthouse. It was built around 1919 to warn seafarers of the dangers that lay close to shore. In 1933, electricity was installed at the lighthouse and today its light can be seen from 33 sea miles away. A lovely wooden walkway takes one from the lighthouse to the ‘kom’ or basin. This natural basin is one of the best sites on land from which to view seabirds.

When you’re in the area don’t forget to pop into Imhoff Farm with its converted farm buildings providing a bakery, tea garden, craft shops, art studios and cheese dairy. There are also camel and horse rides for children. When you see property for sale in the Kommetjie, remember that this suburb is a wonderful location for families, offering wide open spaces, unspoilt natural beauty, incredible beaches and convenient amenities.
