This historical town boasts some of the best wines in the country. Paarl enjoys spectacular mountainside landscapes with small holdings and farms. The region offers visitors beautiful walks and hiking, wine tasting, fine dining and more, all this less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Visiting Paarl will bring you to a huge granite outcrop complete with three domes. The well-known one of the three was originally named Paarleberg, or the Pearl Mountain in 1658. This rock’s name would eventually become the name of the town as well. Today, Paarl is well-known for its historic architecture, fine countryside and amazing wines. Paarl owns unique character and this can be seen in the town’s property and architecture. The vineyards are still grown right in the middle of the town’s residential neighbourhoods. This contributes to creating the country feel of a town which is so to speak a small city, but also due to its struggle to have Afrikaans recognised as a written language. The Afrikaans Language Museum, located in Paarl, bears testament to this struggle and incredible accomplishment. The Main Street of Parl has a wonderful collection of colourful Cape Dutch, Victorian and Georgian buildings that have been beautifully restored. Among these includes the country’s oldest Dutch Reformed Church, called the Strooidak Church. The Paarl Museum is housed in a Cape Dutch home which offers visitors a look at the town’s magnificent history. Many different varieties of grapes are grown in the Paarl region which includes Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. The Paarl wine route is also popular among visitors to the region and includes more than 25 wine cellars including Nederburg, Nelsons Creek and Simonsvlei, among many others. Property for sale in Paarl is becoming rarer as more and more investors and South Africans are snatching up these great investments.
